Social and Economic Justice: Freedom and Security

Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:
(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
(d) freedom of association.
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 2 (Constitution Act, 1982)

What gives the questing, inquiring mind its power is not the accumulation of demonstrable fact, but the release of energies generated by the human hopes and the longing for something better.

The capacity for hope is the most significant fact in life.... It gives values to feelings as well as to facts.

Norman Cousins (Statement before U.S. Congress, 22 July 1975)

I am just beginning to learn, from what I expect to be a very intense tutelage, about the ability of people to organize against all odds, and to resist against all odds.
Rachel Corrie (from an e-mail to her parents, 7 February 2003)

For child poverty, see Child Safety and Welfare; for global trade policy and economic security, see Global Trade Policy and Economic Security; and for social and economic policy and development, see Social and Economic Policy and Development. [Up]
