Note re Star-Naming Scam: A number of private companies offer to officially name or rename (or even sell) a star for a fee. Many of these companies have web-sites (not linked to from here). A few, in order to avoid violating deceptive-trade-practice laws, have included disclaimers noting the fact that the service offered is really a form of entertainment, and has no official status whatever. Most pretend to be reputable firms; some have offices in many countries, and may even register with the Better Business Bureau. Regardless of such disclaimers and the pretense of legitimacy, all of these so-called services are in fact con-games operated by swindlers for the sole purpose of taking advantage of stupid or ignorant people (often bereaved) by lying to them. Several planetarium sites which have included warnings against this kind of fraud have been threatened with malicious but otherwise groundless law-suits. As a result, silly administrators or fearful managers have often ordered such warnings removed. For further information, see the Astronomical Data Center's FAQ, the "Buying a Star" FAQ from the sci.astro.amateur newsgroup, Can I Buy a Star? (Bill McClain et al.), the International Planetarium Society's Official Statement on Star Naming, Jim Craig's So You Want to Buy A Star? One Planetarian's Perspective, the Mueller Planetarium's Star Naming Scam, and Kevin Conod's summary comprising Part 7, Section G.08, of sci.astro's FAQ, Buying a Star: The Facts or How are stars named? Can I name/buy one? (available on many astronomical sites). For star-naming procedures, see also the IPS Guidelines For Star Naming, the International Astronomical Union's Layman's Guide to Naming Stars, and Royal Observatory Greenwich, The Naming of Stars (ROG Leaflet No. 61).
