The Way of the Soul

DESCRIPTION: A path is the way taken, downward to darkness and death, or upward to light and life. The first of thirteen pages on Paths (one of the Field Nodes comprising the subject tree of The Telson Spur), this page and the eight following together comprise a list of links to on-line resources involving the dark side of faith in the pathology of belief and persuasion. The first seven pages contain links to resources for the study of oncomemes, or malignant belief systems: social diseases which have their roots in human suffering, the concomitant fear of pain or loss, and anger at what is seen to be wrong, and which proceed from the consequent desire of some individuals (and many institutions) to gain power over others, through hubris and the need to maintain control, to alienation, abuse, hate, and ultimately violence. (This page and that following contain links to resources for the study of oncomemes in general, and of hate and violence in particular; the next four pages following contains links to resources for the study of political and religious extremism). The seventh through ninth pages comprise a list of links to resources for the study of pseudoscience. The other coordinate pages, with a common header and List of Contents, contain links to resources for the study and practice of religion.

KEYWORDS: abuse; anger; anti-Semitism; anti-unionism; atrocity; authoritarianism; belief; brutality; cognitive dissonance; corporate capitalism; cruelty; evil; hate; hatred; militarism; misogyny; oncomeme; perversion; psychopath; racism; sociopath; violence; war; xenophobia

I summon heaven and earth to witness against you this day: I offer you the choice of life or death, blessing or curse. Choose life and then you and your descendants will live...

Moses (Deuteronomy 30:19, New English Bible)

The graves which hide us from the scorching sun
Are like drawn curtains when the play is done.
Thus playing post we to our latest rest,
And then we die in earnest, not in jest.

Sir Walter Raleigh

And see not ye that braid braid road,
That lies across yon lillie leven?
That is the path of wickedness,
Tho some call it the road to heaven.
Thomas Rymer and the Queen of Elfland

Man is a credulous animal, and must believe something; in the absence of good grounds for belief, he will be satisfied with bad ones.

If we don't have one kind of faith, we are very likely to have another. Faiths which are not watched grow like mushrooms in the dark.

Despite the broad appeal of an open future, some people will oppose it. The power-hungry, the intolerant idealists, and a handful of sheer people-haters will find the prospect of freedom and diversity repugnant. The question is, will they shape public policy?
